The term “THIS MESSAGE HAS NO CONTENT” originates from an error message in an email preview when the Mail App on iPhone and iPad devices does not fully download a message or when the message only contains an image with no text. Digitally mediated communication has come to dictate the interpersonal space of our present. It is also often how we present ourselves to others. This exhibition seeks to explore the insatiable consumption, marketing-centric representation, and vapidly fragmented social interaction of contemporary culture. We are looking for works that reflect on the realm of the social in the digital age. Notions of identity and representation, beauty and normativity in contemporary culture, and experiences of intimacy are just some of topics this show seeks to address. This is about more than presenting anecdotes of social message transmission. It is intended to be a critical look at how communication is sent and received given the digital platforms of cultural consumption in our present.

Rule No Rule

The West Coast art scene is famous for breaking, and re-making, the rules. The same way that the advent of abstraction disrupted numerous art traditions, interdisciplinary art making crosses the expected boundaries of each medium.

For this show we are seeking artworks that embody the freedom and fluidity achieved by the interdisciplinary nature of our local art institutions, and will focus primarily on abstraction. Work should somehow celebrate the pleasure of the freedom of abstraction (in one’s art practice) as this exhibition aims to showcase joyously uninhibited work from the “Wild West.” Possible considerations are the ethos of lawlessness, undiscovered territories, innovation through color and form, or blurring the lines between different media via an interdisciplinary approach. Any and all artworks will be considered, including performance.

Curatorial Proposals

Open to MA students with a focus on art history, curatorial or museum studies, or other similar programs and MFA students. Please submit a 250-500 word proposal for an exhibition to take place at Embark Gallery. Proposals should take into account past programming at Embark, and propose a novel exhibition. The call for artists may not exclude any individual on the basis of race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, age or ability. The proposal must be broad enough that it is feasible for anyone to apply.

Curators should plan to exhibit 4-10 artists. Proposals already focused on specific artists cannot be considered. We encourage proposals that consider current discourse surrounding contemporary art, theory or history that take on new perspectives. Aside from these guidelines, proposals for a show of any medium, theme or subject matter will be considered. The winning proposal will be included in Embark’s October open call for artists and the show will be presented in the spring of 2018. The author of the winning proposal will join the Executive and Curatorial Directors of Embark in selecting artists after submissions for our next call are received, in November 2017. This meeting can be held both virtually or in person.

Neighbors

With the advent of digital technology and instant information sharing, the art world has become increasingly global. Within Bay Area MFA programs there are many international students and students who have multi-national backgrounds. For this exhibition, we are seeking art that explores global cultural experiences. While this show was conceived as a reaction to the current administration’s stance on immigration, we aim to elevate the conversation beyond Trump’s executive orders and US-centric histories to include other perspectives. Topics for this show can include everything from hybridity of cultures, belonging to two places at once, ancestry, ethnicity or religion to refugees, migration, war, politics, and displacement. With this rather broad prompt, we hope to receive a diverse sampling of artworks and approaches that speak to globalization. All media will be considered.

This Is A Test

Every Tuesday at 12pm San Francisco’s Outdoor Alarm System declares, “This is a test... this is only a test.” Inspired by this weekly statement, we invite artists to submit works that address different interpretations of these words. Notions of uncertainty, safety, experimentation, unpredictability, chance-taking, repetition, vulnerability, memory, utopia/dystopia and the void are some of the topics applicable to this show. Some art historical contexts to consider are the Fluxus movement, Dada and Neo-Dada, and Happenings. All media will be considered.

In honor of Embark’s upcoming expansion, this exhibition will explore the theme of growth. Embark calls for artworks that address change, improvement, transformation, transition, multiplying, metamorphosis and/or modification. Subjects can include but are certainly not limited to the body, form, technology, politics and culture, or the history of art. For example, consider borders in terms of nationalism and globalization, or the spread of viruses and growth of parasites.

All media will be considered, and large installation pieces are specifically encouraged for this show. Apply now!

As students earn their degrees and celebrate their success, Embark explores the theme of FAILURE. Embark calls for a broad range of artworks that address inadequacies, deficiencies, and failings, either personal, political or aesthetic. Consider social or political failures, the failure of the individual in the face of larger structures, or even the failure to fit societal norms. These are just a few examples. All media will be considered, including performance. Apply now!

Frame(s) is an recurring one night film and video art event at Embark Gallery. Please apply with film or video work under 20 minutes long. We are currently accepting works in a broad range of subject matter and style.

IMPORTANT: For Frame(s) we are accepting submissions from any and all emerging artists who are local to the Bay Area, meaning you do NOT have to be enrolled in an MFA program at one of the 8 institutions Embark serves to apply for Frame(s.) Apply now!

Embark’s New Writing Fellowship Program seeks impassioned authors to write about Embark programming

Embark is happy to announce an exciting new opportunity for writers. Are you an art historian, critic, academic or an artist with a creative writing practice? Apply now! DEADLINE: September 22nd at midnight

We are looking for critical essays, art historical analyses, artist interviews, journalistic pieces, and creative writing to include in our published exhibition catalogs. Students will get valuable experience in working with a professional gallery, meet and network with other artists and writers from local institutions and learn best practices for creating content for exhibition catalogs. Embark will publish and publicize the writing of these fellows and also provide a small working stipend of $150.

We have 2 openings for the Fall 2016 Writing Fellowship Program. Each fellow will be responsible for 3 pieces of writing (1000-3000 words each) throughout the semester, covering our upcoming exhibitions Humor US and #simulacra.
